Mast Building Group is a Sunshine Coast residential building company specialising in custom homes, renovations and extensions. Led by directors Matthew Murray and Anthony Smith, the business brings together more than 50 years of combined building experience, delivering homes built on quality, honest communication and genuine approach.
But like many good stories, ours started long before Mast Building Group existed.
Before we started Mast Building Group, we had each spent more than two decades running our own building businesses in Sydney. After relocating our families to the Sunshine Coast, we connected and soon discovered we'd actually grown up in the same area back home.
It didn't take long to realise we shared the same approach to building and the commitment to doing things properly. We both believed the best projects are built on genuine relationships and honest communication, starting Mast Building Group together was a natural next step.
When it came time to name the business, we wanted something that reflected who we are rather than simply choosing a name because it sounded good. Anthony suggested combining the initials of our families—Matt, Anthony, Sarah and Tenielle—and that's how MAST was born. It's a simple name, but one that represents the family values our business was built on from day one.
Today, we're proud to be raising our families here on the Sunshine Coast while building homes that become part of our local community. We hope that, years from now, our kids can drive past the homes we've built and feel proud to say, "My dad built that."
It's a reminder that every project we take on is more than just another build—it's a home that will become part of someone else's story, and that's a responsibility we never take lightly.

The satisfaction of standing back at the end of a project and seeing what has been built is what has kept Anthony passionate about building for more than 28 years. Few careers allow you to create something that will stand for many years to come, and that's what continues to drive him today.
Anthony started in the building industry at seventeen, following in the footsteps of his father, who worked as a builder before establishing a successful kitchen and bathroom renovation business. While the opportunity was there to continue the family business, Anthony wanted to forge his own path and build a business of his own.
Across more than 28 years working in Sydney and on the Sunshine Coast, Anthony has delivered everything from custom homes and major renovations to duplex developments, second-storey additions and specialised commercial projects. While he enjoys the challenge of renovations, building custom homes is what he enjoys most. There's something special about walking onto an empty block and creating a home that will stand for many years to come, where another family can create memories of their own.
Anthony understands that building or renovating can feel overwhelming, particularly for first-time clients. Through honest communication, careful planning and genuinely caring about both the process and the final outcome, he works to make the experience as enjoyable as the finished home. No matter how challenging a project becomes, his persistence and commitment to quality never change.
Outside of work, Anthony enjoys spending as much time as possible with his wife and two daughters. Whether it's kicking a ball around at the park, spending the day at the beach or heading to the footy together, family is at the centre of everything he does. Becoming a dad remains one of his proudest achievements and continues to shape the care and perspective he brings to every project.
"After all these years, there's still nothing better than standing back at the end of a project and seeing what we've built. That's what keeps me passionate about being a builder.”

Bringing an idea to life is what has kept Matt passionate about building for more than 26 years. He understands that building a home is one of the biggest investments a family will ever make, so every project is approached with the same care and attention as if his own family were moving in.
Matt started in the industry at sixteen after helping a local builder over the school holidays—an opportunity that turned into a carpentry apprenticeship and a lifelong career. Across more than 26 years working in Sydney and on the Sunshine Coast, he has delivered a wide range of custom new homes, extensions and complex structural renovations.
While Matt enjoys building new homes, renovations are where he draws on his experience and problem-solving skills. Once a renovation begins, challenges often arise that don't appear on the plans, and that's the part he enjoys most—finding practical solutions that keep projects moving without ever compromising on quality.
One of Matt's proudest achievements was building his own family home while running a business. Experiencing those challenges firsthand gave him an even greater appreciation for the trust clients place in their builder, reinforcing the importance of clear communication and treating every home with the same care and attention he would his own.
Outside of work, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife Sarah and their four boys—whether that's camping, riding motorbikes, teaching the kids to surf, or cooking for family and friends.
"Every renovation presents challenges that aren't on the plans. Finding practical solutions without compromising on quality is the part I enjoy most."
Behind every successful build is a team working together, Sarah plays an important role in keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes. From accounts and administration to project support, client communication and day-to-day operations, she helps keep the team organised and projects moving.
No two days are ever the same, which is exactly what Sarah enjoys most. Whether she’s managing accounts, supporting the directors, coordinating with suppliers or helping clients along the way, she takes pride in being part of every project Mast Building Group delivers.
Sarah understands that building or renovating is a significant milestone. By staying organised, communicating clearly and being approachable, she helps make the experience easier for both the team and our clients.
Outside of work, Sarah enjoys family life on the Sunshine Coast with Matt and their four boys. The same kindness, honesty and care she values at home are qualities she brings to Mast every day.
"I enjoy keeping everything organised behind the scenes so the team can focus on what they do best and our clients feel supported every step of the way"
